Sarah Huckabee Sanders is not apologizing over a White House staffer’s reported disparaging remarks about the ailing Senator John McCain.

In a Friday afternoon briefing, Sanders said she would not comment on multiple reports that communications aide Kelly Sadler mocked McCain’s opposition to President Trump’s CIA pick by telling colleagues, “it doesn’t matter, he’s dying anyway.”

Sanders would not address the issue except to say that she wouldn’t comment on an “internal staff meeting.”

She told reporters she’s ‘‘not going to validate a leak out of an internal staff meeting one way or the other.’’

Pressed by reporters, Sanders said Sadler remains on staff at the White House.

White House officials, including Sanders, have not disputed media accounts of Sadler’s comment or offered condemnation of the incident.

On “The View” Friday, McCain’s daughter, Meghan McCain, expressed disbelief that Sadler had not been fired.

‘‘I don’t understand what kind of environment you’re working in when that would be acceptable, and then you can come to work the next day and still have a job,’’ she said.

Sadler’s comment drew condemnation from many corners, with former Vice President Joe Biden issuing a blistering statement Friday that said decency has “hit rock bottom” in the Trump White House.

Arizona’s outgoing junior senator, Republican Jeff Flake, also reacted in a tweet Friday.
